5S is the name of a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words:
seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke, translated into English: Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize and Sustain
Sorting: Eliminate all the ‘unnecessary’, keep only the essential items and eliminate what is not required, prioritizing things per requirements and keeping them in easily-accessible way.
Straightening or Setting in Order to Flow: Arrange the work, workers, equipment, parts, and instructions in such a way that the work flows free of waste, eliminating the non-value added time and allowing the zero defect philosophy to take place.
Systematic Cleaning: Clean the workspace and all equipment, and keep it clean, tidy and organized, to have the workstation always ready for next user.
Standardize: Ensure uniform procedures and setups throughout the operation to promote interchangeability.
Self Discipline: Ensure disciplined adherence to rules and procedures to prevent backsliding
5S is implemented as standard practice in RuB, with people involved from all departments, see updates at www.rubpeoplethinklean.com
